ALMA is a revolutionary astronomical telescope, comprising an array of 66 giant antennas observing millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths. It is situated on the breathtaking Chajnantor Plateau, at an altitude of 5000 metres in the Chilean Andes. Chajnantor means "place of departure" in the Kunza language of the Atacameño people that lived there and named this plateau.
